[Albany IGDA] Making Better Games for Girls: What We Can Learn from Nancy Drew (February 3, 2016)

As part of the regular schedule, we’ll be re-posting descriptions for the Albany IGDA talks that occur at TVGS on the first Wednesday of every month. This month’s speaker is Abi Johnson, and her talk is entitled “Making Better Games for Girls: What We Can Learn from Nancy Drew.”

Talk Details
The talk will discuss the games of the 90s girls’ games movement, most particularly the Nancy Drew adventure game series by developer Her Interactive, in order to help pinpoint what ‘works’ for girls. I will be discussing the difference in playstyles between boys and girls, and what I see working in terms of games that women enjoy, as well as common barriers I see keeping women out of games.

About the Speaker
Abi Johnson is a recent Master’s degree graduate from the University at Albany, with a research focus on women, identity, and video games. She is the developer of the Twine game transmissions, which was a portion of her thesis, “Playing like a Girl.” Her persistent garbage habit shows some signs of payoff.
