Cave Story is a Japanese indie, 2D platform shooter, story-focused game featuring retro graphics, chiptune music, and a cast of wacky characters, with enough easter eggs to make the easter bunny blush. The result of one man’s 5-year labor of love, Cave Story was released to the internet back in 2004. It has frequently played an important part of the history of indie games.

This game is available for free on Windows, Mac, and Linux:

There’s also an enhanced version called Cave Story+ on Steam:

And there’s yet another version available on 3DS called Cave Story 3D. All versions play the same (with a few modes and aesthetic improvements here and there), so feel free to play your favorite edition.
